A focus on AI

AWS re:Invent closed out another AI-heavy year in tech. The splashiest announcements of the year seemed to be focused on generative AI (GenAI) and the rapidly changing large language model (LLM) landscape.

Last year, AWS unveiled its AI-powered assistant, Amazon Q. While AWS didn't provide any single huge AI update at re:Invent 2024, it showcased a bunch of new Amazon Q integrations geared toward helping users consume AWS in more effective ways.

Amazon QuickSight integrations with Amazon Q now provide scenario analysis capabilities. Amazon QuickSight users can interact with GenAI prompts to help perform data analysis that typically could take days or weeks of human analysis to provide valuable insights.

Amazon Q Developer has been enabling GenAI software development capabilities within AWS for the past year. These capabilities have been expanded to include support for enhanced documentation, code reviews and unit testing. Amazon Q Developer started off focusing on the code base but it is quickly evolving to focus on more advanced parts of the development process.

The AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) has helped many customers move workloads to AWS RDS. For customers looking to minimize licensing costs, DMS is capable of performing schema conversion (SC) to migrate into open-source options like PostgreSQL. AWS DMS SC is now capable of using GenAI to enhance the effectiveness of the automatic conversion that it can perform on database objects and code. This conversion process is something that can add a ton of complexity to the migration process, and even possibly dissuade some customers from migrating at all. This new GenAI enhancement could open the door for customers to more confidently unlock the value of AWS open-source database options.

Main takeaway

These are just a few examples of what AWS re:Invent 2024 delivered on the AI front. AWS continues to inject AI into core services that customers use for things like migrations, software development, CI/CD and security. It is apparent that rather than having one or two overall big AI solutions, AWS is using AI to help simplify its core services and make things easier for customers to consume. Whether customers intend to use AI or not, it is apparent that AWS intends to continue expanding the capabilities of Amazon Q and GenAI to help simplify the customer experience.
