It's fair to say that 2023 was one of the most disruptive years in technology with generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) becoming a household name. As organizations race to free up budgets for AI and innovation, the pressure is on for IT to operate more efficiently and cost effectively than ever before.

We believe the disruptive climate of enterprise technology presents CIOs with a unique opportunity in 2024 to kick automation into high gear.

Not only will this help CIOs free needed budget and resources and build more efficient and cost-effective IT organizations, but it also will help them lay a foundation for business process automation, which stands to grow as organizational leaders become increasingly captivated by the idea of an intelligent, automated enterprise.

Many of our clients are eager to learn about robotic process automation, intelligent automation or hyperautomation. However, we find many organizations still need to master the basics of IT automation for investments in these more advanced areas to pay any real dividends. Investing in these solutions prematurely also can add technical debt.

Instead, we advise CIOs in 2024 to focus on the technology and processes that are fundamental to automation.

From a technology standpoint, this could mean upskilling IT staff on scripting and coding, ensuring automation maps to an enterprise architecture, or piloting low-hanging use cases like test automation.

But technology alone won't move the automation needle.

CIOs also would be well served to inspect IT processes before automating them, promote a culture of learning and experimentation, and establish a strategy for prioritizing automations based on business outcomes.
